The phenomenological approach to ethics is one of the approaches that seeks to regenerate novel concepts in ethical thought, thereby resolving the shortcomings of other approaches, including rationalism. Husserl’s phenomenological approach to ethics aims to address controversies surrounding the role of emotions in moral judgments and, at the same time, defend a form of absolute morality akin to Kantian ethics while avoiding the pure formalism of the moral law. The objective of this article is, first, to provide a phenomenological account of Husserl’s ethics and, nevertheless, to defend moral absolutism against moral relativism. The key research questions are as follows: Do emotions and feelings always play a secondary role? Is there a relationship between them and the absoluteness of moral judgments? Does adopting this approach entail relativism in moral judgments? Is there an understanding of emotions—whether as value or as moral motivation—that is involved in moral judgments? In his early period, Husserl criticizes the a priori and formal principles of Kant’s moral law and offers a new formulation of it; however, in his later period, by incorporating concepts such as fundamental renewal and the concept of love, he completes his phenomenological project in ethics.
