English

Aiming to analyze the relationship between freedom and the meaning of life in Jürgen Habermas’s social philosophy, this study employs conceptual analysis and rational reconstruction to extract and articulate the theoretical capacities inherent in the Theory of Communicative Action. The central problem is explaining the paradox of expanding individual freedoms concurrent with the intensifying crisis of meaning in contemporary societies. The primary argument posits that the crisis of meaning cannot be merely attributed to an excess of freedom; rather, it must be sought in the rupture between individual freedom and meaning-generating communicative contexts. The study first establishes the necessary conceptual framework by distinguishing among negative freedom, positive freedom, and “communicative freedom” in Habermas’s thought, as well as by differentiating analytic, Continental, and existentialist approaches to the meaning of life. Subsequently, grounded in this framework, the relation between freedom and meaning is articulated through a tripartite analysis: freedom as the condition of possibility for meaning, freedom as the medium for the realization of meaning in the shared lifeworld, and freedom as an integral dimension of a meaningful life. The findings demonstrate that within this framework, the meaning of life is neither pre-given nor merely individual, but rather an intersubjective achievement realized within rational discourses and in an intrinsic connection with communicative freedom.
