Meaningfulness is closely related to the way human beings live. Whether one understands meaningfulness as an objective or a subjective matter, it plays a fundamental role in human life. The way one views life and the natural world is a decisive factor in the presence or absence of meaning. Mullā Ṣadrā analyzes meaningfulness through the motions of material beings. He regards purposiveness as objective and establishes a direct relation between teleology, the existence of God, and meaningfulness. In his view, the whole cosmos is good, and through substantial motion moves from potentiality to actuality. Motion, in this process, is the instrument for attaining ultimate perfection. Whitehead likewise conceives of the natural world as equivalent to process, oriented toward creative advance. He considers God as the ordering principle of the natural world, which is wholly good. The fundamental constituent of the material world is motion and the relations among them. In this respect, one can discern an affinity between the thought of these two philosophers. From a comparative examination of these two philosophical traditions, meaningfulness can be inferred.
