The problem of time is one of the most fundamental philosophical concerns and occupies a central place in diverse intellectual traditions. Saint Augustine, by relocating the discussion of time from the realm of nature to that of the soul, sought to distance himself from the quantitative and Aristotelian conception of time and to reinterpret it through memory, attention, and expectation. Despite this significant shift, the present study asks whether the Augustinian conception of time can adequately account for the “meaningful moment” as it appears in mystical narratives. This article analyzes the conceptual structure of time in Augustine’s thought and examines its adequacy in relation to the temporal logic of mystical storytelling. The theoretical framework is based on an analytical reading of Book XI of Augustine’s Confessions and a structural analysis of mystical narratives drawing on the views of Qasem Hashemi Nejad. The findings suggest that the Augustinian conception of time, due to its implicit commitment to an extensive and sequential temporal framework, is inadequate for explaining moments of meaning’s emergence in mystical narratives. By suspending causal–temporal logic and generating a qualitative moment of meaning, mystical narrative proposes an alternative horizon for understanding time.
