Many scholars have thus far explored the implications of Mullā Ṣadrā’s theory of "Substantial Motion" (al-ḥaraka al-jawhariyya) in "pure philosophy." However, this theory has not been sufficiently utilized to formulate a spiritual lifestyle.
Employing a descriptive-analytical method, this study seeks to elucidate certain dimensions of this theory and its practical principles and methods to clarify the role of "substantial motion of the soul" in shaping a spiritual lifestyle. Accordingly, it examines the relationship between substantial motion and the soul’s transformative capacity, the gradual perfection of the soul, and the interconnectedness of the soul, body, and the world. Belief in this theory entails certain principles and, consequently, a commitment to applying spiritual methods in one’s lifestyle to guide the individual toward the ultimate desired end. Adopting this perspective yields several key implications, including: wareness of the soul’s transformative nature, safeguarding intentions and actions, gradual perfection as a process, continuity of deeds, constant self-monitoring (murāqaba) and self-reckoning (muḥāsaba), the interconnectedness of soul, body, and the world, a forward-looking and holistic worldview, and selecting actions consistent with this perspective.
