This article addresses the question: How can the unique being of humans — referred to as the "authentic self" (man-i asīl) — be encountered in the process of self-consciousness? The hypothesis of this article posits that a unified interpretation, serving as an answer, can be achieved through a comparative analysis grounded in the thought of Heidegger and Tillich. First, the suspension of prior beliefs — exemplified by the rejection of Cartesian duality — serves as a preliminary step for comprehending the truth of Being. Liberation from subjectivity (subjektivitet) becomes the gateway to realizing a mode of immediate awareness, which is continuously related to presence (ḥuḍūr) as the site of the authentic self’s disclosure. Second, what sustains the "self" at the level of authentic self-consciousness is the stabilization of awareness toward presence. This mode of the self’s manifestation, rooted in "temporality" (ḥāl-būdagi), serves both as a possibility for genuine world-understanding and as a means for transcendence (istiʿlā) — i.e., advancing toward the self’s future possibilities. Third, silence (sukūt) can function as an exercise for — or at least facilitate — the existential understanding of the authentic self; for silence is deeply connected to consciousness, and each essentially reinforces the other. Silence, which is perpetually in the process of actualization, also provides a ground for deepening temporality.
